Website User Experience: 7 Friction Points That Lose Visitors

6 Jul 2026 | Advice & Insights

User experience is not a decorative layer added after a website is designed. It is the practical experience of trying to find information, understand it and complete a task.

Many website problems are small individually but damaging when they appear together.

1. Unclear navigation

Menu labels based on internal departments or jargon can make sense to staff while confusing visitors. Use language your audience is likely to recognise and prioritise the journeys that matter most.

2. Important information is buried

Contact details, key dates, prices, safeguarding information, service eligibility or booking instructions should not require several guesses to locate.

3. The mobile experience is an afterthought

Check whether text remains readable, buttons are easy to use, forms fit the screen and important actions appear at sensible points. A responsive layout is useful only if the resulting journey still works.

4. Pages have no visual hierarchy

Long blocks of text, weak headings and several competing calls to action make scanning difficult. Break information into logical sections and make the next step clear.

5. Forms ask for too much

Every unnecessary field adds friction. Ask only for the information genuinely needed at that stage and make errors easy to understand and correct.

6. Inconsistent patterns make people relearn the site

If buttons, links, page structures and menus behave differently throughout the website, visitors have to keep working out how things function. Reusing familiar patterns reduces that effort.

7. Nobody tests real tasks

Do not only ask whether people like the website. Give them a realistic task, such as finding a service, locating a policy or making an enquiry, and observe where they hesitate.

Good UX creates confidence

A strong user experience helps visitors feel they are in the right place, understand the information and know what to do next. That is why usability is part of communication, not just technology.
